Well hello, its good to see someone with the same interest. However being a student of Mechatronics, I strongly discourage the use of wood as a building material. Wood does not withstand the vibration caused by the engine and the suspension. It will most definitely break under all the dynamic stresses that your vechicle will be subjected to, even when driving on a paved road. I recommend using 1x1 = 25x25mm tubular or boxed steel with a wall thickness of 3mm. If the vechicle is going to weigh more, then perhaps 1.1x1.1 = 30x30mm or something like that would be in order.
If you want, I could help you with calculating the stresses and load tolerances.

Hello from Arizona, USA. I'm planning on building my own ATV also and came across your site. I have different plans in mind. I am going to build the frame of wood (4x4 = 100mm x 100mm beams). The front end will be from a larger motorcycle and the drive will be in back via a small FWD car engine/transmission/suspension. I live in the desert and want something large, stable and reliable. I'm retired and too old to go jumping around out there !! Good luck .. Frank |
